‘ ₹250 crore per km’: Congress MP stuck on Dwarka Expressway amid Delhi rain, hits out Modi government

On Friday, as Delhi was drenched with heavy rain, causing significant waterlogging and traffic chaos, Congress MP Brijendra Singh criticized the Modi government. He shared a video on Twitter of himself being trapped in a tunnel of the Dwarka Expressway due to the waterlogging, stating that he had been stuck for an hour. The tunnel cost the government ₹250 crore per kilometer, according to Singh, who highlighted that the tunnel's inauguration was hailed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a game-changer for the region.

The Prime Minister had announced in 2024 that the Dwarka Expressway would transform the travel experience between Delhi and Haryana, and shift gear not just in vehicles, but also in the lives of people in the area. Delhi's heavy rainfall prompted the India Meteorological Department to raise the yellow warning for the city to a red alert, warning of further downpour and thunderstorms.

The weather affected flight operations, with at least nine flights being diverted between 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm, and the Indira Gandhi International Airport was heavily waterlogged. In addition, parts of Connaught Place, Lutyens' Delhi, and Cyber City in Gurugram experienced severe waterlogging following the downpour. Delhi is expected to have a "good" wet day on Saturday before becoming completely dry from Monday onwards, according to Weatherman Navdeep Dhaiya, who also noted a possibility of rains returning in the third week of September.

The recent rainfall followed a wetter-than-normal August for Delhi, which recorded 354.1 mm of rainfall between August 1 and 30, exceeding the long-period average of 233.1 mm for the month.
