World’s youngest monarch, King Oyo, to be buried September 12

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, Uganda's youngest monarch and world-record holding reigning monarch, has been laid to rest following a nine-day mourning period. The 34-year-old king, who passed away in the United States after battling a form of cancer, was returned to Uganda and buried in Fort Portal, the seat of the Tooro Kingdom.

King Oyo ascended to the throne at the age of three in 1995 and was crowned a king at 18 in 2010. He was the 13th monarch of the Tooro Kingdom, which has a population exceeding two million. His death has left the Tooro monarchy uncertain about its future due to the lack of an official heir. However, it has been reported that the king had a young son, whose identity will be revealed according to Tooro customs.

President Yoweri Museveni had earlier ordered an official burial for the late king, with national flags flying at half-mast for three days. The burial took place on September 12, the same day King Oyo was set to celebrate his coronation anniversary.
