World’s youngest monarch, King Oyo, to be buried September 12

The body of Uganda's King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the world's youngest reigning monarch, has arrived in Uganda to be buried on September 12. King Oyo, who ascended the Tooro throne at the age of three, died in the United States at the age of 34 after battling a severe form of cancer. He was placed in state at Karuziika Palace for public viewing, where members of the public were allowed to pay their respects.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and Opposition MPs also paid tribute to the monarch, acknowledging his legacy of supporting education, healthcare, and opportunities for young people. President Yoweri Museveni has directed that national flags should be flown at half-mast during the funeral, which will take place on the same day as the king's coronation anniversary.

His burial will be held at the Karambi Royal Tombs, where his mother, Queen Best Kemigisa, informed him of the existence of a young heir. The Tooro Kingdom, which has over two million people, follows a hereditary system of monarch selection and retains significant cultural influence despite having no political authority. The kingdom's current head, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, has appealed for privacy and restraint in handling the succession controversy as members of the royal clan question the reported heir.
