UoN to Establish Raila Odinga Centre for Democracy

The University of Nairobi plans to create the Raila Odinga Centre for Democracy in honor of the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his dedication to Kenya's democratic journey. The center will be situated in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, within the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, in collaboration with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy.

The establishment was discussed during a meeting with Mama Ida Odinga, Raila's widow, and her daughter, Winnie Odinga. The university aims to create an enduring institution that will advance democratic values, scholarship, and public discourse associated with Raila Odinga's contributions. It will serve as a platform for scholars, students, policymakers, and members of the public to engage in discussions about democracy and governance.

Mama Ida Odinga welcomed the center, emphasizing that its success depends on the people who use and shape it, not just its name. Winnie Odinga highlighted her father's commitment to democracy and the need for the center to encourage critical questioning and examination of Kenya's democratic institutions. Plans for the center's inauguration are underway.
