Police rescue two abandoned babies in Abuja

Two babies were rescued by police in Abuja on September 2, 2026. The incidents occurred in separate locations - Kurudu and Gwagwalada.

In Kurudu, a resident named Innocent heard a baby crying around Obodo Street at 5:30 PM. He discovered a baby boy wrapped in cloth inside a carton. Police and Juveniles and Women Care Department officers arrived and rescued the baby boy, who was taken to a nearby hospital for examination and is currently stable. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.

Later that same day, at 9:40 PM in Gwagwalada, a resident named Ibrahim heard a baby girl crying outside his gate. Ibrahim, along with other community members, rescued the baby girl and reported the incident to the police. The girl was taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical care and is receiving treatment before being handed over to Social Welfare Development for further care. Police are working to identify the circumstances of the baby's abandonment and locate her family members.

Commendations were made to Innocent, Ibrahim and other community members for their prompt action and alerting the authorities. The public is urged to come forward with any information that could help identify the babies' mothers or relatives by reporting to the nearest police station or contacting the Police Public Relations Officer.
