Police foil cattle rustling attempt, recover eight cows in Bauchi

In a daring attempt thwarted by the Bauchi State Police Command, eight cows were rescued from a potential theft in Darazo Local Government Area. The incident unfolded early Thursday morning, September 3, 2026, following a tip-off to the authorities. Concerned resident alerted the police about suspected cattle rustlers, sparking a swift response from police officers.

According to a statement released on Friday by the command's spokesman, SP Nafiu Habib, the suspects were spotted loading cows into a Chevrolet saloon car with the registration number DAS 452 NE. Two cows were already aboard, while six more were waiting in a nearby location, prepared for loading when the Darazo Division's operatives arrived.

Once the police arrived, the suspects were observed abandoning the vehicle and the eight cows, fleeing into the darkness upon spotting the police presence. The police promptly recovered the Chevrolet saloon, securely containing two cows inside, and discovered the remaining six cows tethered nearby.

The seized cattle and vehicle were handed over to police custody as crucial evidence. The command made efforts to locate the rightful owner of the recovered cattle, who was granted the animals on bond. Meanwhile, a manhunt was initiated for the fleeing suspects, leaving authorities determined to apprehend those responsible.

Bauchi State's Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, expressed his gratitude to the vigilant resident whose information led to the successful recovery. He emphasized the importance of public vigilance and urged citizens to promptly report any suspicious activities to security agencies, reaffirming the command's unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and livestock throughout the state.
