Mullvad – Shutting down our public encrypted DNS

Mullvad, a company that has been providing public encrypted DNS (DoH) servers since 2022, is shutting down its own service and will transition to using Quad9. These servers were never essential for Mullvad VPN users, as traffic is already encrypted and Mullvad VPN's internal DNS takes care of all queries. Mullvad will continue to support Quad9 rather than running it themselves, as running a privacy-focused public DNS service is a highly specialized task.

The Quad9 Foundation is the top leader in this area and their efforts are better suited for this purpose. Mullvad users who have manually configured the DoH servers should switch to Quad9 before November 2nd, 2026. Mullvad Browser users with default or ad-blocking DoH settings will automatically be migrated to Quad9, while customized DoH settings will remain unchanged.

Any existing iOS and macOS Mullvad DoH profiles will stop working, and users need to replace them with Quad9 iOS profiles or macOS profiles.
