KZN father handed life imprisonment for repeatedly raping young children

A man from KwaZulu-Natal received a life sentence in a courtroom on Thursday for repeatedly raping his daughter and niece. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) also imposed an additional eight-year prison term, which will run concurrently, resulting in a life imprisonment. The offenses took place between 2020 and 2022 when the victims were aged 10 and five years old.

The NPA spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, revealed that the man raped his biological daughter on three separate occasions in their bedroom. Moreover, he sexually assaulted his niece in 2022. The case came to light when the children's cousin became suspicious, followed one of the girls to her father's bedroom, and noticed the child's clothes were crumpled.

The cousin reported the incident to the child's mother, who then discovered the father had raped her. The niece's sexual assault was later reported to the police, and the children were taken to the Ngwelezane Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) for medical and psychosocial support. During the trial, six witnesses, including the children, provided evidence, as well as medical examinations.

The victim impact statements, prepared by the children with the help of court preparation officer Seneliso Sibanda, detailed the emotional impact of the assaults. The court ordered the man to be declared unfit to possess a firearm and unsuitable to work with children. His name was also added to the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The NPA reaffirmed its dedication to fighting sexual offenses and gender-based violence, emphasizing the expansion of the Thuthuzela Care Centre network, which has grown from 55 centers in 2020/2021 to 66 centers nationwide, providing essential services to survivors of sexual violence and aiding in the prosecution of offenders.
