Knife-wielding man on Brooklyn Bridge cables fatally shot after ignoring orders to drop weapon

A knife-wielding man was fatally shot by police on the Brooklyn Bridge cables after he ignored repeated orders to drop his weapon, authorities announced on Friday. The incident occurred as the man approached an officer who was attempting to assist him in descending from the bridge. This event, which took place in one of the city's most iconic landmarks, led to the temporary closure of the bridge and created traffic congestion.

The shooting occurred four days following a stabbing incident in Times Square, where a woman randomly stabbed two individuals, killing one, before being fatally shot by police.

The man informed the police rescue team that he wished for them to kill him and claimed to have a bomb, according to Gerard Dowling, the commanding officer of the city's Emergency Services Unit. The officers utilized a safety harness to secure themselves to the bridge and engaged with the man for approximately an hour, urging him to drop the knife.

Multiple attempts were made by the officers to bring the man to safety, but he persisted in climbing down a cable swiftly. The officers, positioned below him on the same cable, were unable to keep pace with the man's movements. When the man came within three feet of an officer, he raised his arm with the knife extended towards the officer.

One of the officers on the bridge's roadbed then opened fire, striking the man once. Following the shooting, the officers brought the man down and initiated medical treatment. He succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.

The officers involved in the encounter were specially trained for high-risk, dangerous situations and received extensive training in de-escalation techniques and compassionate engagement. The name of the deceased man was not disclosed. During the investigation, police recovered a flashlight in addition to the knife. When asked if a bomb was discovered, Dowling stated that the bomb was under investigation.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani disclosed that officers were dispatched in response to a 911 call regarding a man attempting to jump from the bridge. He explained that the police attempted to de-escalate the situation and cautioned the man against jumping. The man was holding a knife and threatened the officers, eventually moving towards them, coming within close proximity to several responding officers. One officer discharged his weapon, fatally striking the man.

The NYPD shared a video on social media in July depicting the Emergency Service Unit's successful rescue of a woman in distress who had climbed onto the bridge. The team specializes in high-angle rescue, scuba diving, and emergency psychological technician training. The Brooklyn Bridge, established in 1883, is a cable-supported suspension bridge that connects Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Its towers stand 276.5 feet (84 meters) above the water. The location of the man and the police officers during the shooting is not specified. The stabbings that took place on Monday occurred near a New York Police Department substation, adjacent to One Times Square, the renowned site of the city's New Year's Eve ball drop celebration.
