BREAKING: FG announces 2 weeks closure of First Niger Bridge for repair works

The Federal Government has announced a two-week closure of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha for urgent repair works. The decision was made after the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, inspected the bridge last week and discovered that bolts and iron rods had been stolen by scavengers. The bridge's deteriorated condition, particularly the carriageway surface and certain components, has been affected by vandalism.

During his visit, the Minister emphasized the need for immediate maintenance and rehabilitation to restore the bridge's safety and functionality. The contractor, Messrs SKECC, has been instructed to commence emergency maintenance works on the bridge, which is expected to be completed by September 21, 2026. Motorists are advised to use the Second Niger Bridge route through Obosi towards Asaba, Delta State, and other destinations throughout the closure period.

Additional safety measures, including traffic diversion arrangements, road signs, safety barriers, traffic-control personnel, and CCTV cameras, will be deployed to ensure the safety of all road users and construction personnel during the closure. The ministry apologizes for the inconvenience caused and assures that the bridge's integrity will be strengthened for the safety of everyone.
