Hubble Telescope sees spectacular 'superbubble' | Space photo of the day for Sept. 4, 2026

A stunning image captured by the Hubble Space Telescope showcases a vast nebula known as LHA 120-N44, or simply N44, nestled in the constellation Dorado of our Milky Way's smaller neighbor, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This celestial marvel lies approximately 160,000 light-years away from Earth. Within N44, scientists have discovered an astonishing feature - a gargantuan "superbubble" taking up roughly 210 by 140 light-years of space, stretching further than the distance between our Sun and Pluto.

The superbubble is intriguing due to the void at its core, which scientists believe could have formed due to the supernova explosions or stellar winds of stars located in the center of the bubble, eroding the nebula's gas and creating the empty space. Despite the mystery surrounding its origin, the superbubble is surrounded by a luminous shell of stars, adding to its visual appeal. Known as an emission nebula, N44's gas is energized by nearby stars, causing it to glow brightly and emit energy during the ionization process.

The Hubble Space Telescope was utilized to observe N44 due to its significance in studying star formation and evolution. In fact, Hubble has already captured images of N44 twice before, in 2021 and 2012, further emphasizing its importance in astronomical research. The telescope also conducted observations with the Chandra X-ray Observatory that resulted in a 2011 paper discussing the role of supernova shock waves and other phenomena shaping the nebula and its cavity.
