HK Marathon 2027 hits record 78k runners in main races

The Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon is set to become its most expansive edition yet in 2027, with organisers revealing a significant boost in race capacity and new community-driven events to attract a wider crowd. The main race, slated for January 17, is expected to host a record-breaking 78,000 runners, a result of a 16% increase in the half marathon quota.

This category will see its participant limit rise from 25,000 to 29,000. In addition to the main races, a new 5km Harbourfront Run will be launched at Kai Tak Sports Park, welcoming participants of all ages and abilities. The two-day festival is anticipated to attract a total of 84,000 attendees, surpassing all previous attendance records.

The surge in interest is attributed to last year's 120,000 applicant registration surge and the growing appeal of the half marathon as a stepping stone towards the full marathon distance. To prevent overcrowding, a refined start strategy will be implemented, with Dennis Ng, Executive Director of the Hong Kong, China Association of Athletics Affiliates, confirming a staggered approach to maintain safety.

The earliest race will begin at 5:30am as the Challenge group, with its participant count raised to approximately 2,500. The number of non-challenge races will increase from three to four, allowing for a larger participant base. The Marathon Expo at Kai Tak Arena, a popular hub for participants and the public, will remain a key event, drawing over 100,000 visitors over the past two years.

The marathon, half marathon, 10km race, and wheelchair event will all take place on January 17, with age-group categories remaining consistent. Public ballot registration for the main events opens on September 11.
