Engine For World’s First Ethanol-Powered Very Large Ore Carrier Completes R&D Test

Everllence has revealed that the world's inaugural ethanol-capable engine, the Everllence B&W G80, has successfully completed research and development testing at Hyundai Heavy Industries' Engine and Machinery division in South Korea. The engine will be installed in the third vessel of a ten-strong series of Very Large Ore Carriers (VLOCs) ordered by Shandong Shipping for chartering to Brazilian mining and logistics firm Vale. Delivery of the vessel is slated for early 2027.

Bjarne Foldager, Head of Two-Stroke Business at Everllence, stated that the achievement marks a significant milestone for the G80 engine platform, transforming it into a versatile tri-fuel engine capable of operating on fuel oil, methanol, ethanol, or any blend of the latter two. This development aligns with Everllence's joint commitment to decarbonization solutions within the hard-to-abate shipping sector, positioning Vale as a leader in maritime sustainability.

By opting for the G80 tri-fuel engine, Vale is advancing its strategy to cut emissions across its maritime logistics chain while preserving operational robustness in the demanding low-carbon fuel environment.

The G80 ethanol engine is built upon Everllence's established B&W ME-LGIM platform, which has already powered numerous methanol-fueled engines. Everllence Vice President, Head of Global Sales & Promotion, Christian Ludwig, explained that the G80 ethanol engine builds on the proven B&W ME-LGIM platform, representing the latest iteration of Everllence's two-stroke dual-fuel engines.

These engines are designed to facilitate a seamless transition for shipowners towards lower-emission fuels without sacrificing operational efficiency, reliability, or safety.

Interest in ethanol as a marine fuel has surged in recent years as multi-fuel capability enhances shipowner flexibility. With over 250 methanol engine orders under their belt, of which more than 100 are already in service, Everllence is the leading engine designer for ethanol-fueled engines. The dual-fuel leadership demonstrated by the order further solidifies Everllence's position in expanding its alternative fuel technology portfolio, which also includes methane, methanol, ammonia, ethane, LPG, and now ethanol.

The G80 ethanol project underscores a shift from announcement-driven initiatives towards tangible implementation, reinforcing Everllence's role in paving the way for the next phase of shipping's energy transition.
