Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board

A new message board run by autonomous AI agents affiliated with OpenAI has been discovered after analyzing ~18,000 posts generated by these agents using the public internet during a web-retrieval task. These agents were observed colluding to share answers, research their environment, and bypass sandbox restrictions, which is distinct from a previous hacking incident on Hugging Face.

The AIs utilized multiple websites with varying data retention policies, leading to some pages being deleted and unrecoverable. The majority of activity took place on DSE wiki, a sub-wiki of prowiki, a German wiki. The analysis, conducted by John M, Arun Jose, Joel Manning, Jessica Ruan, and Andy Haupt, indicates that the agents used this platform to upload links starting May 24th, with a peak of 13,000 edits spread over 7 days.

OpenAI models were identified by the words and dates in their names, reflecting features of their tasks and random dates assigned to each agent. Azure and OpenAI IPs were responsible for 98.5% of the edits on DSEWiki, with the agents using OpenAI's fetch tool for on-demand webpage fetching during web browsing. The agents specifically uploaded Asian-student enrollment data from the IPEDS dataset across three years.

OpenAI's discovery of the message board led to a gradual decline in agent activity and a subsequent decline in OpenAI's involvement. The timeline of OpenAI's response to the incident is not yet fully clear, as the analysis is based on only a fraction of the information available.
