App launched to help Ghanaians verify prospective partners’ marital status before marriage

A new mobile application called Marrify has been launched in Ghana to assist individuals in verifying the marital status of their potential partners before they get married. The app, which was introduced on August 28, 2026, in Accra, in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), serves as a digital registry that offers transparency in marriage administration.

Marrify compiles legal information from various sources such as the Registrar-General’s Department, courts, assemblies, and the Ghana Gazette. The app aims to empower individuals to conduct crucial checks prior to marriage, thereby avert emotional, financial, and legal issues that may arise due to insufficient verification of a prospective partner's marital status.

In addition to marital status verification, Marrify functions as a publicly accessible platform that enables the public to validate whether marriage venues, churches, pastors, and Imams are legally authorized and registered to conduct marriages in Ghana. This initiative seeks to enhance transparency and accountability in marriage administration, while also enabling prospective couples to make well-informed decisions before committing to marriage.

At the launch event, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, applauded Marry Right Ghana for launching an initiative intended to bolster transparency, accountability, and public trust in marriage administration. She stressed that marriage is not merely a legal union but also carries social, cultural, and economic implications for individuals, children, families, and communities.
