App launched to help Ghanaians verify prospective partners’ marital status before marriage

A new app called Marrify has been launched in Ghana to assist individuals in verifying the marital status of their potential partners before entering into marriage. The app, which was introduced in Accra on August 28, 2026, in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), functions as a searchable digital registry. It aggregates legal information from various sources such as the Registrar-General’s Department, courts, assemblies, and the Ghana Gazette.

The objective behind Marrify is to promote transparency in marriage administration, thereby helping people avoid emotional, financial, and legal complications that can arise from incomplete information about their prospective partners. The app is not just limited to checking marital status; it also provides a platform for the public to verify the licensing and registration of marriage venues, churches, pastors, and Imams, thereby fostering greater transparency and accountability in marriage-related matters.

Speaking at the app's launch, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, praised the initiative for its potential to bolster transparency, accountability, and public trust in marriage administration. Dr Lartey underscored the multifaceted nature of marriage, extending its importance beyond a legal union to encompass social, cultural, and economic dimensions that impact individuals, children, families, and communities.
