Trump floats renaming Strait of Hormuz as ‘Trump Strait’ before later walking back the idea

On September 3, US President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz as "Trump Strait" in response to ongoing hostilities with Iran. However, a few hours later, Trump suggested the idea was not meant to be taken seriously. The president claimed the US held full control of the vital waterway, despite fresh clashes with Iran.

Trump's social media network, Truth Social, displayed the proposed name, describing it as "hotter" than ever before. The White House subsequently released a map of the Gulf with the suggested name, stating it had a "nice ring to it." The White House also noted the proposal was a light-hearted suggestion. Trump later downplayed the possibility of renaming the Strait of Hormuz, saying it was just a joke.

However, the Republican has made several similar geographical naming attempts in the past, some of which have been implemented, such as renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America." The Iran conflict remains a serious issue, with no end in sight since the initial US-Israeli strike six months ago. Tensions have escalated recently, with Trump announcing readiness for another attack on Iran and Iran retaliating with strikes against US bases in several countries.
