#SHOWBIZ: Veteran Hong Kong actor Lau Siu Ming dies at 94

Hong Kong actor Lau Siu Ming passed away at the age of 94 on September 2, 2025. Renowned for his role as the compassionate father of Tony Leung Chiu Wai's iconic Inspector Cheung Wai Kit in the 1980s drama series Police Cadet and its two sequels, Lau breathed his last at 6 pm. His demise was confirmed by a close friend and fellow actor, Ding Yue.

Known affectionately as Ming Sir, Lau had been grappling with declining health in recent years. Wheelchair-bound, he had celebrated his 93rd birthday in the hospital. AsiaOne reported that Lau's last public appearance was in October 2025, when he attended a reception in Hong Kong to mark the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

A pioneer of Hong Kong's dance industry, Lau was awarded a scholarship in the 1960s to study Classical Ballet at the Research Centre in France. After returning to Hong Kong in 1967, he transitioned from a dance choreographer and instructor to acting. Lau made his film debut in Tsui Hark's The Butterfly Murders (1979). Apart from Police Cadet, he starred in The Legend of the Condor Heroes (1983) and A Chinese Ghost Story (1987). Lau retired after the passing of his wife of over five decades in 2012.
