Report: Iranian missiles hit Jordan hotel where US officers were staying

King Abdullah II of Jordan has appointed Maj Gen Majdi Al Harasis as the new head of the military, following Iranian aerial attacks. Al Harasis, born in 1971 and previously heading military intelligence from 2022 to 2025, replaces Maj Gen Yousef Al Huneiti, who is in his late 60s. Al Huneiti, with an air force background, retired and was promoted to Lt Gen. King Abdullah praised Al Harasis as a dedicated soldier and exceptional officer, highlighting Jordan's ongoing efforts to safeguard its land and skies amidst the Iranian attacks.

Iran has been launching missile and drone strikes against Jordan since the Iran war began in late February, though no Jordanian fatalities have been reported. Recent attacks have targeted US military bases and compounds, with no casualties among Jordanian forces. Despite frequent attacks, Jordan remains a vital US ally and host to thousands of American troops and receives significant security assistance.

Jordan also maintains security cooperation with Israel, per the 1994 peace treaty, but King Abdullah has criticized Israel's actions in Gaza and the West Bank. Since October 2023, the Jordanian authorities have tightened control over dissent, imposing limits on protests in support of Palestinians. In April, the kingdom banned the Muslim Brotherhood after members were implicated in an alleged armed plot against the country's security.

Earlier this year, King Abdullah ordered changes to Jordan's military to adapt to technological changes and expanded operational areas.
