Israel frees 5 Lebanese prisoners in bid to advance talks with Beirut

Iran has delivered a stern warning to the United States, threatening forceful retaliation if Israel decides to launch an offensive against the Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon. This ridge, a strategic hotspot in the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, is believed to be a fortified post shared by Iranian military personnel and Hezbollah fighters, complete with an underground command center and weapons storage facilities.

Iran's warning came in the form of a message relayed through Oman around mid-August, a period during which Israel had reportedly refrained from storming the area due to U.S. pressure. Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia militant group, has publicly asserted control over the ridge and vowed to confront any Israeli advances. The Israeli military has been closely monitoring the ridge, considering it a primary operational focus in its military strategy.

Tehran's threat implies that a full-scale Israeli assault on the ridge would prompt a massive Iranian counterattack. Despite Hezbollah's denial of the presence of Iranian forces at Ali al-Taher, several regional officials claim the presence of over a dozen Revolutionary Guards Corps members, including senior officers. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have launched several airstrikes and drone strikes against Hezbollah positions near the ridge, despite a ceasefire agreement reached in June.

The situation at Ali al-Taher remains fluid, with Hezbollah maintaining access to their positions through the ridge's northern side. If Iran chooses to follow through with its threat, the implications could be dire, potentially reigniting a large-scale conflict in the region.
