Port Otago in New Zealand invests in 10 hybrid straddle carriers and fleet management technology from Konecranes

Port Otago Limited, a significant trade gateway on New Zealand's South Island, has recently placed an order for ten hybrid Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers. The delivery of these state-of-the-art vessels is scheduled to conclude by August 2027, following their booking in June of the same year.

The new straddle carriers, each with a 60-tonne lifting capacity, are equipped with twin-lift spreaders that can manage either two 20-foot containers or one 40-foot container. This versatility allows for flexible and efficient container handling operations, both in terms of import and export ISO containers.

In addition to the advanced straddle carriers, the order also includes Konecranes' Noell Fleet Management System. This comprehensive fleet management solution provides real-time telemetry and operational data across the entire fleet. It supports data-driven decision-making, analysis of fleet-wide performance, and efficient utilization of equipment.

Kevin Kearney, Strategic Projects Manager at Port Otago, expressed his satisfaction with the investment, stating that Konecranes' delivery of high-performance equipment, advanced fleet management capabilities, and strong local service support made them the ideal partner for this project.

Peter Kania, Sales Director at Konecranes, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the benefits of the hybrid straddle carriers for Port Otago. These include higher productivity, lower total cost of ownership, and long-term operational reliability.

The hybrid technology of the straddle carriers, combined with the advanced fleet management system, is expected to contribute to lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions, aligning with Konecranes' Ecolifting approach and the broader trend towards more sustainable container terminal operations.

For the maintenance and support of the new fleet, Konecranes has set up a regional service organization in Australia and New Zealand. This ensures the availability of trained and experienced technicians who will help maximize equipment availability and lifecycle performance.
