Police pay N2.3bn to families of 2,971 deceased officers

The Nigeria Police Force has disbursed a total of N2.317 billion in insurance and welfare benefits to 2,971 beneficiaries, including the next-of-kin of deceased police officers. Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu made the announcement in Abuja on Thursday, presenting the cheques to the recipients. The payments encompassed insurance policy years from 2017/2018 to 2024/2025, and also included outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies.

Disu emphasized that these payments were legitimate entitlements, recognizing the sacrifices made by officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. He underscored the importance of the exercise, stating that it conveyed a message of the police force's commitment to the families of those who had made the ultimate sacrifice. Disu also addressed the ongoing challenges faced by the security environment, highlighting several instances where police personnel lost their lives during attacks and operations across the country.

He reminded the beneficiaries that while the financial benefits could not replace the loved ones they had lost, they represented the institution's responsibility and appreciation for their sacrifices. Disu urged the beneficiaries to use the funds wisely, particularly for the education and welfare of their children and dependents.

He expressed sympathy for the bereaved families and promised continued efforts to improve the welfare and working conditions of police personnel and their families.
