OpenAI launches GPT-6 Astra and says welcome to the “AGI era”

OpenAI unveiled GPT-6 Astra, its most advanced model to date, on Thursday. President Greg Brockman characterized Astra as "the world's most intelligent and aligned model," suggesting it represents the onset of the "AGI era." However, he clarified that the term AGI no longer serves as a contractual trigger tied to a deal with Microsoft, instead becoming a "mission concept or spiritual concept."

While Astra is currently only accessible to enterprise customers, it will be rolled out to other user tiers in the coming days. The model's launch comes with a higher price tag of $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, making it more expensive than some of its competitors. Despite the higher price, OpenAI claims Astra uses fewer tokens on several evaluations and in partner tests, potentially offsetting the cost premium.

The model demonstrated significant improvements in tasks like DeepSWE v1.1, ARC-AGI-3, and BenchCAD's Vision2Code subset. However, it fell short in some areas compared to competitors like Meta's Muse Spark 1.3 and Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.
