Nepal seeks climate justice after Himalayan disaster

Nepal is calling for climate justice following one of its worst climate-linked disasters that killed over 1,200 people and left more than 4,750 missing last week. The Aug 26 glacial collapse, triggered by melting glaciers due to climate change, destroyed villages, roads, bridges and hydropower dams on the China-Nepal border. Local residents expressed shock and anger, questioning why Nepal, a country that has contributed little to global warming, has suffered such a devastating disaster.

Climate experts warn that the Himalayan region is warming at roughly twice the global rate, leading to more frequent and severe disasters. Nepal's leaders are urging the international community to provide long-term support to adapt to the rapidly changing mountain environment, emphasizing that it is a matter of climate justice rather than charity.
