Nepal seeks climate justice after Himalayan disaster

Nepal is seeking climate justice after one of its worst climate-linked disasters killed over 1,000 people and left nearly 4,000 missing last week. The flood, triggered by a wall of icy debris from a glacial collapse on the China-Nepal border, destroyed homes and infrastructure in Nepal's Rasuwa district. Climate activist and politician Tashi Lhazom questioned what Nepal had done to deserve this disaster, emphasizing that the country is among the most climate-vulnerable yet climate-friendly nations.

The glacial collapse, though the exact cause remains unclear, is a result of global warming causing glaciers to melt worldwide, increasing the risk of such disasters. Nepal, a rural nation contributing little to greenhouse gas emissions, faces massive reconstruction costs and highlights the need for international support under the principle of climate justice.

Scientists warn that the Himalayan region is warming at twice the global rate, with cascading disasters becoming more common. The disaster underlines the urgent need for data-sharing mechanisms and international cooperation to build resilience against future climate-related hazards.
