How much do teachers earn in South Africa in 2026? The top salaries revealed

In South Africa, the pay for educators has seen significant increases, particularly for those in senior and management roles. This information was revealed by Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube, who announced the new salary scales for educators, effective from April 2026. The salary adjustments are outlined in Schedule 1 and Schedule 2.

The salary structure is based on Relative Education Qualification Value (REQV) levels, which consider a teacher's qualifications and training. This helps to determine their position in the salary structure. At the entry-level, an educator earns R169,707 annually, or roughly R14,142 monthly before deductions. Conversely, the highest-paid position, a Principal P5, can earn up to R1.33 million per year, or approximately R110,569 monthly.

The pay gap between entry-level and top-level positions is substantial. A Principal P5's salary range is from R892,764 to R1,326,822 annually, while an experienced teacher in the REQV 14-17 category can earn between R366,051 and R794,151 a year, or R30,970 to R66,179 monthly. A Senior Teacher with an REQV 13 can earn between R431,640 and R600,504, or R35,970 to R50,042 monthly. A Master Teacher with an REQV 14-17 can earn between R505,302 and R794,151, or R42,108 to R66,180 monthly.

Management roles also offer higher salaries. Departmental heads can earn up to R1,094,826 annually, while deputy principals can earn up to R1,183,578. The top position, a Principal P5, can earn between R892,764 and R1,326,822 annually.
