George Lucas unveils long-awaited Museum of Narrative Art in LA after nearly two decades

In Los Angeles, renowned filmmaker George Lucas unveiled the Museum of Narrative Art on September 3, 2026, after nearly two decades of dedication and overcoming numerous challenges. The museum, a $1.3 billion project built with Lucas's wife and business partner Mellody Hobson, is set to open to the public on September 22, 2026.

Describing the construction process as "almost breaking my will," Lucas expressed his unique approach to art, stating, "I’m used to doing the impossible. This one almost broke my will." He referred to the complex as the "people's temple of art," emphasizing its purpose to foster a sense of community through shared narratives.

Situated on the former site of a parking lot adjacent to the University of Southern California, Lucas's alma mater, the museum was strategically chosen for its connection to the city's cinematic history. The museum's entrance features a yellow Naboo N-1 starfighter from the Star Wars saga, with over 9,300 square meters of exhibition space showcasing works by prominent artists such as Banksy, Frida Kahlo, and Norman Rockwell.

The museum's diverse collection spans various media, including comics, illustrations, and manga, highlighting the power of visual storytelling. Lucas aims to emphasize the importance of illustrators and their ability to create immersive narratives through visual mediums. The museum's architect, Ma Yansong, described the building's green roof as a futuristic design element intended to captivate visitors' curiosity and spark their imagination, inviting them to explore the museum's unique offerings.
