Fire rips through distinctive Queensland highway hotel

A significant fire has ravaged Falvey's Sundowner Saloon, a striking pink pub located on the Warrego Highway at Haigslea, west of Ipswich in Queensland. The exact origin of the blaze remains undetermined. The distinctive landmark pub, which straddles the main highway connecting Brisbane to Toowoomba, suffered substantial damage following the inferno that ignited at 8:30 in the morning. The Wardroe Highway, a crucial route linking the two major cities, was temporarily disrupted by the emergency response to the incident.

Upon arrival, firefighters were confronted with dense black smoke, necessitating immediate action to secure the premises. Acting Inspector Dan Skellern of the Queensland Fire Department explained that the fire was fueled by various items inside the pub, including carpets and poker machines. Six fire vehicles and two specialized units were deployed to tackle the blaze, underscoring the considerable fuel load the fire consumed.

One of the pub's employees, who was present when the fire erupted, was treated for smoke inhalation after he attempted to extinguish the flames before professional emergency responders arrived on the scene. Skellern noted that the fire was quickly contained to the pub and did not spread to the neighboring bottle shop. As a precautionary measure, a nearby petrol station was also evacuated due to the inhalation of toxic smoke that was spreading towards that location. In a bid to mitigate any potential hazard, fuel supplies at the service station were isolated.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
