ChatGPT, Claude, Grok AI down for several users globally

OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude AI and Elon Musk's Grok AI experienced widespread outages, according to the real-time monitoring website Downdetector. Users across the globe reported difficulties with the platforms, with over 43,000 users alone experiencing problems on Thursday evening (IST). OpenAI stated that they had identified an issue causing elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex, their programming tool.

The company acknowledged the problem and is working on a resolution. Users reported strange behavior, such as the site not opening and attempts to download unusual files. The underlying cause of the outages is believed to be linked to Microsoft Azure, as all three AI bots rely on Azure for cloud services. While Claude AI and Google Gemini also faced issues, Google's Gemini appeared to function normally.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) was also impacted by the disruptions. Anthropic, the parent company of Claude AI, has identified the cause of the errors affecting Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Fable 5.1, and Claude Opus 5. They are actively working on a fix and have confirmed that only Opus 4.8 and Opus 5 remain affected, while the rest of the models have returned to normal error rates.
