After 264 days at sea, USS Abraham Lincoln arrives at Thailand’s notorious sex-tourism hub

After a 250-day stint aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, a ship that had traversed the Middle East, the crew of nearly 5,000 sailors set foot on Thai shores in Pattaya. Instead of immediately indulging in the local nightlife, the majority of the sailors chose to shop at the Hard Rock Hotel and other nearby establishments. Their military uniforms stood out against the beachgoers in flip-flops and beachwear.

As night fell, the city's entertainment district, Walking Street, welcomed the crew, with a welcoming sign at the entrance. Some younger sailors became intoxicated, while older crew members spoke of the relief and boredom of finally being ashore. Concerns about low morale had been expressed, especially after hostilities broke out in the Middle East.

The USS Abraham Lincoln's crew was instructed to avoid discussing onboard conditions, but some were willing to share their feelings. The ship's Shore Liaison Group members were visible, tasked with maintaining discipline and coordinating with local authorities. US officials were cautious about the sailors' activities, emphasizing adherence to US law and naval regulations.

The stop in Pattaya was seen as a beneficial break for the crew, allowing them to rest and recharge before returning home to California.
