A successful test of a "flying base station" has been conducted, the first in Japan. This technology is expected to provide communication means during disasters. The test was conducted on September 13th by a consortium consisting of NTTドコモ, 国際航業, and Sky Perfect JNI. The consortium used a drone, measuring 4 meters in length, 3.5 meters in width, and 1.5 meters in height, and weighing 26 kilograms, equipped with a 4G LTE base station. The test confirmed that communication was possible from an altitude of 150 to 200 meters, covering a radius of 5 kilometers. The consortium aims to put this technology into practical use in 2021. In the event of a disaster, it is expected that this technology will enable mobile phone communication in areas where communication infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has also expressed interest in this technology, citing its potential to improve communication infrastructure in remote areas. The use of drones is expected to provide a flexible and efficient means of providing communication services in a variety of situations. The Japanese government has been promoting the use of drones in various fields, including disaster response and infrastructure inspection. This successful test marks a significant step forward in the development of this technology.
