USS Abraham Lincoln seen off Thai port after months at sea

Pattaya, a popular resort city in Thailand, welcomed the USS Abraham Lincoln, a US aircraft carrier, off its shore after months at sea on Wednesday, AFP reporters observed. The massive nuclear-powered vessel was seen approaching Laem Chabang port near Pattaya, marking its first land visit for its 5,000 crew since November.

The Abraham Lincoln departed from California in November 2025, initially heading to the South China Sea before being redirected to the Middle East following US-Israeli attacks on Iran that began six months prior. News of substandard living conditions and mental health issues among the crew, including attempted suicides, garnered attention in the United States, leading to criticism of President Donald Trump's administration's stance on Iran.

In response, Pattaya has ramped up security measures to accommodate the incoming sailors and Marines. The city, well-known for its beaches and nightlife, has a history of controversy surrounding sex tourism. Pattaya's mayor, Poramase Ngampiches, announced the provision of buses for transportation to and from the ship until its departure on Sunday.

He emphasized the city's focus on safety and fair pricing, warning against taking advantage of the military personnel. The mayor also clarified that water sports and cannabis consumption are restricted but encouraged the sailors to explore Pattaya's other attractions, such as malls and religious sites.
