USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier docks in Thailand after nine months at sea

The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, at the center of a political dispute over conditions aboard after months at sea, entered a Thai port on Wednesday, according to AFP reporters. The massive nuclear-powered vessel was seen approaching Laem Chabang port near Pattaya, south of Bangkok, marking its first land visit for its 5,000 crew since November.

The Abraham Lincoln departed California in November 2025 for duty in the South China Sea but was rerouted to the Middle East following Israeli attacks on Iran that commenced six months ago. Reports of declining living conditions and mental health issues on board, including suicide attempts, have stirred controversy in the United States, drawing criticism of President Donald Trump's war against Iran.

Pattaya, a resort city popular with US troops since the Vietnam War, has intensified security measures as it prepares to welcome the sailors and Marines. The city, renowned for its beaches and nightlife, has faced scrutiny over sex tourism. Pattaya's mayor, Poramase Ngampiches, announced recent crackdowns on sex work but denied any connection to the US arrivals.

Buses have been arranged to transport the sailors from the ship to Pattaya and back until the carrier departs on Sunday. Mayor Ngampiches stated, "They come to relax. Our preparations will focus on safety and ensuring fair pricing, so we don't take advantage of them." While sex-related activities are banned, such as jet skiing, residents encouraged the sailors to enjoy other attractions, like malls and religious sites.
