Man shot dead in Sydney home invasion appears to be 'innocent'

A Sydney man, identified as Marco Tapia, was shot dead during a home invasion incident early Tuesday morning, according to police. The university student, in his 20s, died at the scene after multiple offenders broke into his Glen Alpine home. Initial reports described the attack as a targeted assault, but police now believe it may have been a case of mistaken identity.

The incident occurred around 3:40am when emergency services were called to the home in the city's south-west following reports of a shooting. Tapia, who had only one known prior offense of a traffic violation, was recognized by police for his age and occupation. His family was home at the time of the incident and have been assisting police with their investigation.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon described the shooting as "completely unacceptable" and added that such an innocent life being lost should not be accepted by any community. Police Minister Yasmin Catley expressed shock at the incident but maintained confidence in the police force's ability to combat organized crime. The community could find solace in the relentless efforts made by the police to target organized crime networks, according to Commissioner Lanyon.
