US President Trump suggests renaming Strait of Hormuz as ‘Trump Strait’

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz "Trump Strait," even though the strategic waterway remains a point of contention in the ongoing conflict with Iran. In a post on his Truth Social network, Trump joked, "Now that we have it under USA control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???

Like America itself, it would be 'hotter' than ever before!" The White House also shared Trump's statement on X, including a map with "Trump Strait" replacing the name of the Strait of Hormuz. This suggestion follows a week in which Trump ordered Lake Ontario to be renamed "Lake America" during a trade dispute with Canada. Earlier in his presidency, Trump had renamed the Gulf of Mexico "Gulf of America" on his first day back in office.

Despite these renaming efforts, neither Mexico nor Canada have accepted the changes. Trump has repeatedly threatened to claim sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, even posting a map depicting the waterway as a "new US territory." However, Iran has effectively blocked the crucial chokepoint, accounting for a fifth of the world's oil supply, as retaliation for the war initiated by Trump and Israel in late February.

Oil prices have since risen following US forces' recent strikes near the Strait of Hormuz in response to what Trump alleged were new minelaying activities by Iran.
