US Army Says It Completed "Wave Of Strikes" Against Iranian Military

On Tuesday, the United States resumed military strikes against Iran, as reported by US Central Command (Centcom). The US claims these strikes were in retaliation for recent attempted attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Iranian Red Crescent, four people, including a young child, were killed in the US attacks in Sirik, a southern Iranian city, when shrapnel hit a home hosting a wedding celebration.

Over 50 individuals sustained injuries. In response, Iran launched attacks on US military bases in Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain, according to local state media and the Jordanian Armed Forces. Iran's IRGC claimed the US would "regret" the strikes. By early Wednesday, Iran had retaliated with a barrage of ballistic missiles targeting a US Marine base in Jordan's Aqaba.

The Jordanian Armed Forces intercepted 13 ballistic missiles, 10 of which were destroyed, while three fell in remote areas, causing no deaths or injuries. Iran's national security center warned residents of the Aqaba and Mafraq governates of falling debris, but the warning has since ceased. Kuwait's army reported responding to Iranian missile attacks early Wednesday, with several explosions also noted in Bahrain following Iranian strikes.

US President Donald Trump had earlier threatened Iran with more severe punishment if it retaliated. This attack comes after the first known US strikes on Iran since late July, when US forces targeted two rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, leading to retaliation by Iran's firing of missiles at air bases in Jordan and a drone attack on the UAE.

Centcom reported the US strikes began at 12:00 ET (16:00 GMT) and were completed by early Wednesday. Iranian state media reported the deaths of a four-year-old child and injuries in various locations. US Navy Captain Tim Hawkins stated that the US military never targets civilians, contradicting the Iranian claim. The US and Israel launched broad-ranging strikes on Iran on February 28, which Iran responded to by targeting Israel, US bases, and allied states in the Gulf, effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz to marine traffic.

An agreement to extend a ceasefire between the two countries expired in June, leading to renewed hostilities. Both the US and Iran have targeted shipping, with Iran attacking vessels accused of bypassing the Strait without permission and the US enforcing a naval blockade of Iranian ports. On August 24, the US Treasury Secretary announced a fresh sanctions campaign to further isolate Iran and expand secondary sanctions against its allies.

Iranian officials and state media have largely dismissed these measures, viewing them as continuations of previous US economic actions following military failures in recent conflicts. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian claimed Iran would reciprocate if the US returned to adhering to the agreement.
