Iran retaliates after US strikes kill four at wedding party, state media reports

Iran retaliated against the United States after American forces resumed missile strikes against Iran, killing four individuals, including a child, during a wedding celebration in Sirik, southern Iran. The Iranian Red Crescent reported the incident, while US Central Command (Centcom) stated that the strikes were in response to recent attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The IRGC claimed that the US would regret the strikes. By early Wednesday, Iran had launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at a US Marine base in Jordan's Aqaba, according to Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency. The Jordanian Armed Forces intercepted 13 ballistic missiles, with 10 being destroyed and the remaining three falling in remote areas.

No casualties or injuries resulted from the attack. Iranian national security forces warned residents of the Aqaba and Mafraq governorates about falling debris, which was then deemed to be over. Kuwait's air defenses responded to Iranian missile attacks around the same time, with several explosions reported in Bahrain due to Iranian aggression.

Donald Trump had warned that Iran would face further retaliation in a "much harder and higher level" if it retaliated. The attack comes just weeks after the US and Iran engaged in a series of strikes in February, leading to retaliatory attacks in Jordan and Bahrain. The US and Iran have also been targeting shipping vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran targeting those attempting to bypass the naval blockade.

In an effort to isolate Iran further, the US imposed fresh sanctions on the country on August 24, aiming to expand secondary sanctions against its allies. Iranian officials and state media have dismissed these measures as mere continuation of previous US economic sanctions. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran would reciprocate if the US returned to its commitments under the agreement, albeit critics argue that the sanctions are merely a continuation of previous US actions due to the US military failure in recent conflicts.
