Ukrainian War Documentary ‘Brace For Oblivion’ Wins in Ireland, Comes to Kyiv

An American filmmaker’s four-year-long journey documenting the lives of Ukrainian soldiers has culminated in a critically acclaimed documentary titled “Brace For Oblivion.” The film, directed and produced by Xackery Irving, clinched the Best International Documentary Award at the Galway Film Fleadh in Ireland. Now, the movie is set to return to Ukraine for a special screening at the Odesa International Film Festival in Kyiv on September 4th, at 12:30 p.m. at Zhovten Cinema.

Irving began filming in Ukraine shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, closely following Ukrainian volunteers as they transitioned from civilian life to defending their homeland. Over the course of four years, he captured the experiences of seven ordinary individuals whose lives were irrevocably changed by the war. Rather than presenting a broad overview of the conflict, the documentary delves into the intimate consequences of prolonged combat on the body, mind, and soul.

It explores the physical and psychological toll of war and the challenges servicemembers face in reintegrating into civilian life.

One of the central figures featured in the film, Junior Lieutenant Bohdan Patel, attended the international premiere in Galway, traveling from active duty in Ukraine to Ireland to participate in a Q&A session with the audience.
