Two dead after Monday attack on Saudi oil tanker in Hormuz, says shipping firm

Two Filipino sailors lost their lives in a recent incident involving a Saudi-flagged very large crude carrier, the Sidr, while it was navigating through the Strait of Hormuz on August 31, according to Bahri, the company that operates the vessel. The maritime disaster occurred when the ship was approximately 16.6 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman. Bahri has stated that the crew members perished due to the unfortunate event and is currently conducting an investigation and evaluating the incident's consequences.

The Strait of Hormuz, an essential energy corridor, is a critical shipping route responsible for carrying about a fifth of global oil supplies. Unfortunately, the Strait has become increasingly hazardous for commercial shipping due to heightened risks in the region. As reported by the International Maritime Organisation, there were 70 confirmed maritime incidents and 19 seafarer fatalities in the area as of August 26, prior to the latest attack.

The international community remains concerned about the ongoing safety issues in the Strait of Hormuz, as attacks on shipping vessels continue to disrupt the already vulnerable energy supply chain.
