Trump floats renaming Strait of Hormuz as ‘Trump Strait’

US President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz as "Trump Strait" on Wednesday, despite ongoing conflicts with Iran. This suggestion was later followed by doubt from the White House, with the administration stating that it was merely a jest. Trump has made a series of geographical name changes in his second term, which are often perceived as attempts to mock other nations.

He recently claimed full control of the crucial waterway, even as tension escalated with Iran. The U.S. White House shared a map of the Gulf with the proposed new name, stating it had a nice ring to it. Trump has threatened to claim sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks, including posting a map depicting it as a new U.S. territory.

However, he later downplayed the idea of renaming the waterway. The Iran war remains ongoing, with no end in sight more than six months after the initial US-Israeli assault. The conflict has resulted in a steep increase in U.S. fuel costs and poses a significant threat to the November midterm elections for Trump's Republican Party.
