Trump floats renaming Strait of Hormuz as 'Trump Strait'

Washington — In a recent statement on his Truth Social network, U.S. President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz to Trump Strait. The president emphasized that, now under U.S. control, the waterway should bear the name of the country it belongs to. He humorously suggested that with America's influence, the region would "be hotter than ever before."

This proposal follows a week in which Trump ordered Lake Ontario to be renamed as Lake America during a trade dispute with Canada. Earlier this year, in January 2025, Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America upon his return to office. However, these name changes have not been recognized by Mexico or Canada.

Iran maintains a stance on the matter, with the country effectively controlling access to the Strait of Hormuz despite the ongoing conflict. Trump has frequently threatened to assert sovereignty over the waterway, even sharing a map that depicted it as a new U.S. territory. While Trump's previous name changes have sometimes been playful, he has followed through on some of them, making them official.
