Fedorov was fired as defense minister in July after only six months in the position, a move described by some as "totally incomprehensible."

Fedorov was popular and credited with playing a role in Ukraine's recent successes in the war, reclaiming territory from Russia. At 35, he clashed with President Volodymyr Zelensky and Defense Minister Oleksandr Syrsky. In his time in government, he focused on modernizing Ukraine's military and prioritizing new technology. Fedorov and Karp knew each other through Palantir's involvement in Ukraine.

Palantir has provided its Maven Smart Systems platform to Ukraine's defense, used for information management, targeting, and defense infrastructure. Palantir CEO Karp has faced criticism for his comments that the company helps the West deter enemies when necessary, and "in some cases, kill them." Despite the controversy, Palantir's stock has had a meteoric rise in recent years, with the company now valued at over $430 billion, making it one of the 50 most valuable companies in the world.

Palantir is controversial in Norway, with some parties in the Storting and interest organizations calling for Norway to boycott the company. It is known that Tollvesenet uses Palantir technology.
