Russian attack hits rail workers in new deadly strikes on Kyiv

A devastating Russian missile and drone attack has claimed at least 12 lives and left 20 injured, including two young children, in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, officials have revealed. Six casualties were railway workers employed by the state company Ukrzaliznytsia, after their depot was struck in the Ukrainian capital. Russia claimed it launched a "massive strike using high-precision weapons" targeting military and energy infrastructure, while asserting one Russian was killed in retaliatory strikes against Russian forces in Belgorod region.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to conclude the war, emphasizing that "every day spent in war pushes humanity back" and stating that each step towards peace brings renewed hope. India, dependent on discounted oil from Moscow, has repeatedly implored Putin to cease hostilities.

Throughout the night in Kyiv, a total of eight people were reported dead, with additional buildings reduced to ashes in three districts. Another four individuals perished in nearby Boryspil following a residential building hit. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that approximately 350 rescue workers engaged in a night-time rescue mission in Kyiv and adjacent areas following the fresh strikes.

According to a statement on social media, Russian forces unleashed a significant array of jet drones and ballistic missiles during the onslaught. This marks the sixth day of persistent Russian drone and missile assaults on Kyiv, suggesting a deliberate tactic to exhaust Ukrainian air defenses and dampen civilian morale. The military warned over the weekend that its forces were preparing for "massive" strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities.

Eight other Ukrainian regions were also targeted, with an Indian national among the fatalities, who tragically lost his life in Boryspil.

On Friday, 38 people were killed in Russian strikes targeting a weapons depot in the Kyiv region, causing explosions from shells, mines, and drones. Meanwhile, a drone attack on a major Russian port in Ust-Luga triggered a fire, according to Leningrad regional Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko. Ukraine deems such targets, like Ust-Luga, which handles millions of tons of petroleum annually, as justified as they bolster Moscow's war financing.
