Matiang’i raises concern over how Ruto’s govt is addressing illegal guns inflow

Jubilee Deputy Leader Fred Matiang’i has criticized the administration for its inadequate response to the influx of illegal firearms in Kenya. During an interview on September 2, 2026, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary expressed dissatisfaction with the current government's efforts to curb the illegal sale and smuggling of guns.

Matiang’i lamented that his previous administration had been more aggressive in tackling the issue, using methods such as inspecting homes for weapons and destroying them. In contrast, he alleged that the present regime has not taken similar actions, suggesting that a significant number of illegal guns remain in circulation. The Deputy Leader also pointed out that Kenya's geographical proximity to unstable nations increases the risk of illegal arms entering the country.

He argued that the easing of the crackdown on firearms during this administration's tenure has contributed to the current security challenges. Matiang’i vowed to eliminate goonism if elected president in 2027, promising a society free from such criminal elements. He expressed concern over the rise of goons in public areas, citing recent incidents where groups demanded money from motorists and robbed individuals in Hurligham.
