Russian advances in Ukraine ground to a near-halt in August as casualties surged

In August, Russian advances in Ukraine stalled and saw a surge in troop casualties, according to a September 1 analysis by Texty.org.ua. This came following the appointment of Mykhailo Drapatoyi as Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The positive trend in military developments was first observed as early as February 2026, following the appointment of Mykhailo Fedorov as defense minister.

The analysis tracked shifts across every front-line sector since June 2026. In August, the northern front was marked by intense trench warfare, while in the border regions of Sumy Oblast, Russian forces used infiltration tactics and conducted relentless air strikes. In Kharkiv, fighting intensified in urban areas and forests, with neither side making territorial gains.

The Vovchansk area remained static, with both sides sustaining heavy combat. Ukrainian forces countered Russian efforts in Kupiansk, preventing enemy advances and pushing back with targeted strikes. Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi saw Russian forces attempting to infiltrate, but Ukrainian forces repelled these attempts. In Lyman, Russian forces struggled with minefields and vegetation, while Ukrainian forces seized initiative with counterattacks.

Russian attempts to capture Kostiantynivka continued, but they had not fully entered the city. To the north, Russian forces broke through toward Stinky, and southwest, they captured Illinivka. Russian missile strikes and guided aerial bomb attacks intensified on Sloviansk. A local Ukrainian counteroffensive retook approximately 126 square kilometers of territory across three oblasts.

Russian forces aimed to establish a foothold for infantry attacks on Sloviansk, needing to capture several buffer settlements first. The Institute for the Study of War reported that the Russian army's spring-summer offensive yielded little results, with limited territorial gains.
