Wike blames Abuja flooding on illegal construction, climate change

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has linked Abuja's recent flooding to a combination of factors, including illegal construction on waterways and climate change. During a media discussion in Port Harcourt, Wike highlighted how the obstruction of waterways by unauthorized building activities has led to the recurring flooding in parts of Abuja.

He stated, "The floods in Abuja today are a result of people building on waterways in Abuja illegally over the years." Wike revealed that the FCT Administration has taken action against officials involved in such illegal developments, including suspending a director for unlawfully granting building approvals on waterways. However, Wike emphasized that human activities alone are not the sole cause of the flooding.

He acknowledged that climate change also plays a significant role in the recent flooding experienced in Abuja. These comments follow recent concerns over flooding in the capital city following heavy rainfall.
