Ukraine’s Security Service says it foiled FSB plot to assassinate Russian opposition leader in Kyiv – several wounded in street shootout

On September 2nd, a shootout occurred in Kyiv, Ukraine, where Ukrainian security personnel were involved in an investigation into an alleged Russian plot to assassinate a Russian opposition leader. Several individuals were wounded during the incident, which took place in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi district. Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK), reportedly was abducted from his home, prompting law enforcement to arrive and engage in gunfire with the abductors.

The Russian Volunteer Corps had claimed that unknown individuals had abducted Kaplunov from his courtyard.

Ukraine's State Bureau of Investigation confirmed receiving a complaint from Kaplunov's lawyers alleging his abduction and was examining it for possible registration as a criminal proceeding. Three officers of Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) sustained injuries in the exchange of gunfire. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) stated that the confrontation occurred during an investigation into the alleged Russian plot, as their agents were conducting a search at a location linked to the case when a group of individuals launched an armed attack on them.

The SBU deployed its Alpha special operations unit to halt the resistance, resulting in several wounded individuals resisting arrest. Ukrainian authorities have not officially identified the detainees or their military unit, but seized weapons and documents from them. The incident has raised concerns among Ukrainian officials, including Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine's Presidential Office, who has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, emphasizing that no one should be allowed to abduct servicemen or give orders with impunity.
