Premier League spending hits new record for second consecutive year

The Premier League clubs have set a new transfer spending record for the second consecutive year, with expenditure reaching a staggering £3.46 billion. Deadline day spending alone skyrocketed to £475 million, up from £391 million the previous year. This summer, three of the top 10 most expensive transfers in football history have been completed by Premier League clubs, all involving English teams.

The standout deal was Enzo Fernandez's £125 million move from Chelsea to Manchester City, matching the British transfer record. Other significant deals included City's £116 million acquisition of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, and Chelsea's £117 million signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. Liverpool also made waves with a £106 million deal for Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola, with the potential for the fee to rise to £123 million.

Tottenham and Manchester City also made substantial investments, with their club-record signings of Sandro Tonali and Ayyoub Bouaddi, respectively. The Premier League's spending dominance is clear when compared to other European leagues, with La Liga clubs spending between £640 million and £650 million this summer, and Serie A clubs spending around £1 billion.

The Premier League's spending gap with its European counterparts has been growing for several years, with English clubs spending £3.2 billion in 2025 alone, a significant increase from the previous record of approximately £2.46 billion in 2024.
