Police: It’s not our responsibility to control cows roaming Abuja streets

The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that their role in controlling roaming cows in the Federal Capital Territory does not fall within their mandate. Police spokesperson Ani Iniedu made this statement during a joint security spokespersons' briefing, responding to inquiries about the increasing presence of cows on roads and other public spaces in Abuja.

Iniedu explained that the responsibility for managing animals, including cattle, lies with the relevant environment authorities. The police would only step in if the animals cause damage to property, trespass, or engage in other offenses. He stated, "The responsibility for the control of animals is the Ministry or Department of the Environment.

Where we come in is if the cow has committed an offence or the cow is involved in the destruction of your property or trespassing your property. If that is the case, it is reported to the nearest police station." The police spokesperson added that any complaint formally lodged over alleged offenses committed by roaming cattle would be investigated immediately by the force.

However, he noted that if the police were to go out specifically searching for cows, it would not be part of their mandate.
