Nvidia CEO urges G20 to avoid AI rules on 'theoretical' harms

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang urged G20 countries on Wednesday to refrain from enacting regulations centered around theoretical AI risks, and instead develop rules targeting real-world issues associated with the technology. Huang's remarks were made during a tech-focused G20 meeting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, alongside U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

Other notable attendees include Anthropic's Tom Brown and OpenAI's Sam Altman. Huang's stance aligns with the Trump administration's and other American tech executives' calls for reduced global regulation of their rapidly expanding businesses, or to influence the rules as they are formulated. These executives argue that excessive federal government requirements could negatively impact the industry's profits by slowing the release of new models or compelling companies to modify their products to address security concerns.

U.S. President Donald Trump's tech advisor, Michael Kratsios, stated on Tuesday that the U.S. aims to convince G20 members not to create entirely new AI regulations, but rather to focus on establishing rules for novel situations involving the technology.
